What causes the difference between men's and women's wages?

The factors causing differences between men's and women's wages can be summarized as follows:
  • Differences between men and women concerning qualification, years of experience, occupation (profession), positions, etc. These are the so-called structural causes.
  • Underevaluation of women's work in industries and professions dominated by women, and the direct discrimination by employers.

Men and women work in different economic fields, sectors and professions. This can partly be explained by the different gender socialization and the effort to come up to the gender roles. This phenomenon is called horizontal segregation.
Experience shows that men tend to achieve positions in the professional / work hierarchy more easily than women. This is the so-called vertical segregation.
